Flat White: History and Present

It's 2026 now. With a new generation of coffee personalities like Flatwhitefrank and Flatwhitejuan putting the Flat White back in the spotlight, it's worth remembering where the drink comes from: a double ristretto, a thin layer of textured milk, no foam dome. That's why Mister LGB went out and Milk MAN came in — same coffee, new way of drinking it.

Why does our cappuccino cost €4,20?

In the video below, Yaeko explains the cost breakdown of our most popular drink — the cappuccino — so you can see exactly where the €4,20 goes: green coffee, roasting, milk, rent, and the people making it. Transparency is easier in numbers than in words.

Why some of our coffees are called 'Rare'

In our Rare Coffee Series we highlight coffees that had something specific going on: an unusual variety, a one-off fermentation, a tiny lot that will not come back next harvest. When promoting around thirty single origin coffees every year and, as a lot of coffees resemble each other, we wanted a label for the ones that stand out. They are roasted in small batches, packed in our Rare colours and gone when they are gone.

Geisha Coffee at Caffenation in 2026

After several years of Geisha drought at Caffenation, 2025 marked a strong comeback for this remarkable variety. For 2026, we are buying more lots than ever: washed Geisha from Colombia and natural Geisha from Ethiopia, both roasted light to keep the jasmine and bergamot intact. Geisha is not cheap, and we are not pretending otherwise — but a 250 g bag is still the most affordable way to drink it.

Coffees of the Year 2025

And here it is — our long-awaited list of favourite coffees from the past year, voted on by staff and owners: an Ethiopian natural, a Kenyan washed, a Peruvian organic and one surprise Colombian. Two categories, filter and espresso, because the same bean can behave like two different coffees.

There is a new Mister in coffee town: MAN!

There are times for coming, and times for going. Goodbye Mister LGB, and welcome Milk MAN. The Milk Man espresso is a milk-forward blend for flat whites and cappuccinos: cocoa, roasted almond and a long caramel finish. The original Mister LGB recipe still lives on in the capsules.

Big Country Series. 5) INDONESIA

Indonesia stands among the biggest and most uniquely characterful coffee origins in the world. Wet-hulled Sumatran lots are the opposite of a clean washed coffee, and that is exactly the point: cedar, tobacco, dried fig and a heavy body. In our Big Country Series we walk through the origins that shaped how coffee tastes today.

Crafting Blends at Caffenation, and a word on 'Specialty Coffee' labeling

Crafting Blends at Caffenation: a word on Mister LGB, Roast ED and the Cape Town Blend. A blend is not a lesser coffee — it is a recipe. We cup components separately, then build for body, sweetness and consistency across the year, because the harvest changes and your espresso should not. 'Specialty' we reserve for coffees cupping at 80+ points, with a traceable farm and a price we can defend.

A Visit to Hacienda Sonora — Costa Rica's Coffee Gem

After hearing so many good stories about the Sonora farm and the country of Costa Rica in general, I finally made the trip. Sonora runs on solar, grows shade trees over the coffee and processes honey lots in a way that keeps the cup sweet and clean. Expect red apple, panela and a long finish.

Coffee sourcing in Kenya and Ethiopia — a report

This year, I made my comeback to the cupping tables in Nairobi and Addis Ababa — and this time, I brought along a camera. Hundreds of samples, a lot of rejections, and a handful of lots worth the airfare. Seasonality is key: Kenyan top lots land in spring, Ethiopian naturals in autumn.

Why some coffees are called decaf — and 2025 was the year of DECAF

It's no secret that decaffeinated coffee is gaining popularity by the hour. While we remain loyal to the Sugar Cane decaf Ethyl Acetate process, we keep cupping everything on the market. The Tumbaga '26 is the best NoCaf we have ever sold: cocoa, red fruit, no cardboard anywhere in sight.

The hottest drink these days is Iced Coffee

It's hot, it's delicious, and we look forward to it every day. But what about when coffee isn't hot? Brew it strong, pour it over ice, use the Eco Cup — and please do not put sugar in a good Ethiopian natural, it is already sweet.

Caffenation's Direct Trade Program

Direct trade coffee is generally described as a sourcing model built on close relationships between specialty roasters and coffee producers. We buy the majority of our coffees this way: visiting farms, cupping at origin and agreeing prices that sit above the commodity market — and we publish the numbers every year in our Transparency Report.

Why you should go visit Caffenation ZUID

Yes, you heard me right. You need to visit our flagship bar Caffenation ZUID. Well, at least if you're a coffee enthusiast. Three bars in Antwerp, one roastery behind all of them — the same coffees you order online, pulled by people who dialled them in that morning.

Big Country Series. 4) PERU — and what else is landing in 2026

A few years ago, I started a blog series on key coffee origins but paused after covering Ethiopia, Kenya and Guatemala. Now, I feel it is time to pick it back up: after Indonesia, Peru. Organic smallholders in Cajamarca, washed and dried on raised beds, cocoa and orange peel in the cup. Also on the way: Rwanda and Burundi are coming back after three misty years, a new crop of Ugandan lots, and our annual X-Mas coffees.
